The men and women of the Alma Police Department serve the law
enforcement needs of the people of the City of Alma twenty four
hours a day, 365 days a year. An officer is available to answer
calls for service through the Gratiot Central Dispatch Authority,
remember in an emergency to Dial 911. The office of the Alma Police
Department is open from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through
Friday. A direct telephone link to Gratiot Central Dispatch is
located in a call box right outside the City Hall doors for those
coming to the department when the office is closed.
The department is commanded by the Director of Public Safety who
is responsible for the efficient and effective management of
fourteen sworn officers - a Police Chief, a Detective and a
Sergeant, and ten Police Officers - as well as a full time and
part-time Police Clerk.
All sworn officers have received Michigan Law Enforcement Officer
Training Council certification. Four officers have received
additional training as Mountain Bike Officers. Two officers have
been certified as Field Training Officers and the department has
three certified Firearms Instructors.
Citizens of Alma will see the officers patrolling in three marked
patrol units, two police mountain bicycles or on foot throughout the
city. They may not see them in the department's three unmarked
vehicles. The department has had strong involvement in TEAM Policing
and the Bike Patrol. The department also does child fingerprinting
or bicycle licensing at the request of various organizations.
