Building permits are necessary for constructing or altering a structure, building an addition to demolish or move a structure, for change of occupancy, to install or alter equipment regulated by code, or to move a lot line which affects an existing structure. Any proposed construction within the floodway boundaries as denoted on the National Flood Insurance maps also require building permits and review. Building Regulations are for the protection of public health, safety and welfare. The City of Alma follows the Michigan Building Code.
The state building code says:
“The provisions of the Building Code apply to the construction, alteration, movement, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal and demolition of every building or structure or any appurtenances connected or attached to such buildings or structures.”
The purpose of these codes is to provide minimum standards for buildings constructed in a way that provides for structural integrity, fire safety and, most importantly, safe means of egress.
Permits are not required for ordinary repairs to structures. Repairs should not include removing walls, partition or portion thereof. For further clarification, contact the Building Inspection Services Department.
It is our goal to provide the services outlined in the codes in a professional and prompt manner.
If you need to apply for a building permit, come to the inspection department at 525 E. Superior with a site plan, materials list, construction drawings, cost of the project and an application that can be also be downloaded from this website.
