PUBLIC NOTICE
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has received a water withdrawal permit application by the Gratiot Area Water Authority. The proposed groundwater withdrawal of 3.56 million gallons per day capacity is for replacement of the existing City of St. Louis community water supply. Groundwater contamination resulting from a nearby Superfund site has been detected in the City of St. Louis water supply , with a likelihood of even greater susceptibility in the future. The proposed withdrawal locations are removed from the contamination area, and in the vicinity of the City of Alma community water supply wells. The cities of Alma and St. Louis have together formed the Gratiot Area Water Authority to create a shared water supply to service the neighboring communities. The proposed withdrawal wells are located in Sections 4 and 8 of Arcada Township, T11N R03W, Gratiot County.
The MDEQ provides this public notice and a public comment period of not less than 45 days before making a determination on the application. The water withdrawal permit application can be viewed at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deq/deq-wrd-swas-glsu-gawa_ww_permitapp_454520_7.pdf
